Sex and the City
Sex and the City
It was always a struggle to like these characters. On the tv show, their quirks and their flaws made me like them while their narcisism and shallowness made me uncomfortable about spending so much time with them. Imagine a show about 4 guys who talk incessantly about clothes and who they slept with. Who have contempt for anyone who doesn't dress as cool as them or go to the cool places they go to. You'd hate those guys. Well in the movie the Fab 4 make my skin crawl. In the first place suddenly they're all rich. On the tv show they occasionally paid lip service to the fact that some people can't buy whatever they want. In the movie they wear hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of clothes and they spend money like water. Carrie is marrying Mr Big and she pays absolutely no attention to his feelings about the wedding. It's all her. When he has a panic attack and balks, it lasts a few minutes. She attacks him with a fury that is truly scary. Miranda treats Steve like garbage then dumps him over one fall from grace. Nothing less than perfection will satisfy these women. Samantha has been living with Smith for five years. I have no idea why. There is no sign that she loves him or even likes him. She is constantly lusting after other men. She throws a fit because he comes home late when he called to say he'd be home late. Was he supposed to close the movie set down because she got horny? And Charlotte. God bless Charlotte. She may be self involved and shallow (she changed religions because she really didn't care what religion she was. She just wanted the guy) But at least she's not mean. There's an assistant. She's black. She has no discernable personality. She's just there for Carrie to hug. I am truly sorry that these women have become such role models for a generation of girls. The women I know are a hundred times more diverse and interesting than these four. Interested in the world around them, interested in so much more than satisfying their own appetites, for clothes, for men, for money, for more. It's great that a movie about women is a success at the box office. Now please can we have a movie about women more like the facinating women in the real world?
